How to pixelate an image

  1. Choose a photo — or drop it on the page, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
  2. Pick Whole photo, or Brush areas to pixelate only parts of it.
  3. Choose the block size: Fine for a soft retro look, Heavy or Huge to hide details.
  4. Hold Hold to see original to compare, then download PNG or JPG.

How to pixelate a face, a name or a number plate

Switch to Brush areas and paint over the face or text. Make the brush a little bigger than the thing you are hiding. For sensitive information, choose Solid cover and cover beyond every edge; mosaic can still leave recognizable details. Each stroke keeps its chosen effect. Check the downloaded result at full size before sharing.

Pixelate or blur?

Both hide detail. Pixelation is the classic look for censoring faces and screen names, and big blocks remove more information than a light blur. For documents with numbers, such as card or account numbers, covering them with a solid box is safest.

Want the whole picture as retro game art with a limited palette instead? Try Photo to Pixel Art.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pixelate an image?

Choose a photo, pick a block size, and download. For the whole photo keep “Whole photo”; to hide only a face, a name or a number plate, switch to “Brush areas” and paint over it.

How do I pixelate part of a picture?

Switch to “Brush areas”, set the brush size and paint over what you want to hide. Undo removes the last stroke (Ctrl/⌘ + Z works too), Clear starts again.

Is the photo uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so private photos stay on your device.

Will the downloaded image lose quality?

Photos within the recommended export budget keep their original dimensions. For large photos, choose the displayed recommended size or try the original size, which uses more memory. PNG uses lossless compression; JPG makes a smaller file with some compression loss.

Is pixelation safe for hiding faces and text?

Pixelation is not reliable redaction: fine blocks can leave recognizable text or facial details. For sensitive information, switch to “Brush areas”, choose “Solid cover” and paint beyond every edge. Check the downloaded image before sharing; no tool can guarantee anonymity from other visible details.

What is the difference between pixelate and pixel art?

Pixelating keeps the photo’s size and turns areas into big squares. Pixel art shrinks the whole picture to a small grid of pixels with a limited palette — for that, use Photo to Pixel Art.
