How to make a coloring page from a photo
- Choose a photo, drop it on the page or paste it with Ctrl+V. Try the cat sample if you want to explore first.
- Pick a preset as a starting point. A well-lit subject against a plain background makes the outlines easier to separate.
- Adjust Detail to keep more or fewer edges and Line width to make the remaining lines heavier. Open Clean up texture and use Smoothing to soften fine texture.
- Compare the photo and outlines. Check small areas such as eyes and whiskers before downloading.
- Download a PNG, or choose A4 or Letter and an orientation, then print. Your browser’s print dialog can also save a PDF where supported.
How the outlines are made
This is an edge filter, not an AI drawing tool. It places transparent areas on white, smooths brightness values, then measures the brightness gradient to find possible contours. Two thresholds keep strong edges and weaker edges connected to them; isolated weak marks are discarded. The remaining edges become black lines on white.
White background → smoothing → brightness gradient → two-threshold filtering → black outlines
More detail can keep faint contours, but also brings back texture. More smoothing can remove speckles, but may lose small features. Thicker lines change the weight of the detected edges; they cannot invent an outline that the photo does not contain.
Worked example: the cat sample
Open the cat sample and choose the Pet preset: detail 60, line radius 1and smoothing 2. These settings are a starting point for keeping the cat’s main contours while smoothing some fur texture. Inspect the preview, then lower detail or increase smoothing if there are too many small marks. Downloading saves a PNG at the photo’s proportions, with a maximum of 1800 pixels on the longest side.
Printing a coloring sheet
Choose A4 or Letter and portrait or landscape. The image fits inside 10 mm margins without stretching. In the browser’s print dialog, match the paper size and orientation, and turn off browser headers and footers if they appear. You can choose Save as PDF instead of a printer when that option is available.
Which photos work best?
Start with one clear subject, good lighting and a simple background. Low contrast can leave gaps, while patterned fabric, foliage and fur can produce lots of lines. This tool does not understand objects or complete missing shapes, so not every photo becomes a clean coloring page. Cropping your photo beforehand can help keep attention on the subject.
